Pharmacodynamics:
Pharmacotherapeutic group: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (protein hydrolytic enzymes).
ATC code: B06AA04.
Chymotrypsin is a proteolytic enzyme, prepared by activating chymotrypsinogen extracted from bovine pancreas. Chymotrypsin specifically cuts the chain links of aromatic amino acids (phenylamine, tyrosine, tryptophan, methionine, norleucine and norvaline), so it breaks down vitreous zonules without causing severe damage to other structures of the eyes.
Chymotrypsin has also been used to treat edema caused by inflammation, after trauma, and after surgery. This drug has little evidence of an anti-inflammatory effect in other inflammatory diseases (respiritis, sinusitis, etc.).
Pharmacokinetics:
Chymotrypsin crosses the intestinal barrier and enters the bloodstream via the lymphatic route. In the blood, chymotrypsin gradually migrates to the sites of inflammation and gradually decreases in blood concentration.
